- Step forward from McLaren and Carlos, who reached Q3 and qualified on a solid sixth place (1:29.522) for this Sunday’s race.
- Carlos was faster than a Ferrari and a Red Bull, as well as the cars with whom McLaren fights for the fourth spot of the Constructors’ Championship.
- The Spaniard made his way through Q2 with the medium tyre, giving him the edge on the race strategy given that he won’t have to deal with the severe degradation that the soft compound experiences at this event.
"Congratulation to everyone in McLaren, because this result is very good for all of us. Congratulations to the team here at the track and also to the people back at the factory. We qualified ahead of some important cars and we can be happy, although we must keep working hard. The strategy to qualify on mediums paid off. Now it’s time to prepare well for tomorrow’s race".
"It was a long time coming since the last time I was so close to the leaders, despite the fact that this weekend has been quite challenging, even though it may not look like it is. I don’t feel completely comfortable in the car, I was lacking the comfort I had in Monaco or Canada, maybe because all the experimental work I did yesterday. This is why I am so happy with today’s result. We have potential for tomorrow".
