High mileage and good pace as Carlos Sainz wraps-up 2019 pre-season testing for McLaren

The next time he will be back in the MCL34 will be in the Australian GP

Montmelo, 1st March 2019.- Carlos Sainz has finished with very good sensations the pre-season testing for the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship. The Spanish driver from McLaren completed 134 laps in the last day of winter practice at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which turned out to be the most active one for the Woking-based team.

In the morning session, Carlos put together 59 laps combining short and medium runs. In one of them, he set a fastest of 1:16.913 which stayed in the standings until the end of the day. It was also McLaren’s fastest lap of the entire pre-season.

In the afternoon, the MCL34 turned its attention to long runs. It executed a full race distance, leaving a very good impression both on the driver himself and on the entire team. In the final laps, Carlos could make some final checks before calling it a day, feeling satisfied with the work done on track.

"It’s always nice to go to Australia finishing the test on a bit of a high, having covered a lot of mileage – the most for me in all four days of testing. I also finished my first race simulation without any issues, and did some performance runs in the morning which were useful for our understanding of the car".

"Now I’ll go back to the factory to do some final work with the team so we can feel fully prepared before the first race. We’ve been very focussed on our own preparation and performance, so it’s impossible to tell exactly how that compares to our competitors".

"Thank you to the team for their hard work over the past two weeks, and now we look forward to getting the season properly started".

McLaren finishes winter testing with 873 laps in total, equivalent to 4.063 laps. Such is the value of this experience for the preparations for the new season ahead, that mileage has increased by 46% and 105% when compared to 2018 and 2017 respectively.

Formula 1 will travel now to the other side of the world, to Melbourne, home to the first Grand Prix of the 2019 season. The Australian GP will be held at the iconic Albert Park Circuit, with Free Practice starting on the 15th of March and the race itself scheduled for the 17th. As always, you will be able to be up-to-date with Carlos on his social media channels and his official website,
