- Carlos came back from eighth to fifth and defended from a Red Bull to repeat his best result as a McLaren driver.
- The Spaniard passed his teammate and Pierre Gasly at the start. He then went by Valtteri Bottas after the Fin made an extra stop with his Mercedes.
- Despite starting on soft tyres, Carlos managed to extend his first stint beyond the cars on mediums, therefore pitting and holding on to his fifth place. He defended from Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly in the second half of the race, giving no overtaking opportunities despite the narrow margin between both cars.
"Second race in a row that we finish fifth. Today’s result tastes much better than Germany’s. We fought hard all the way, especially after the stop to not concede Pierre [Gasly] any overtaking opportunities. We passed Lando and Gasly at the start taking the inside line through Turn 1. Then I focused on tyre management, which was pretty good. We matched Ferrari’s pace, which is a testament to our speed this weekend. We pitted ahead of our rivals and then it was a race to the chequered flag with a Red Bull at my gearbox".
"We can now go on holidays feeling very happy and satisfied, even though I would like to race in Belgium next weekend. We are in a good moment, I think you can sense it on track. I feel confident. We have scored many points in the last races, which is fantastic both for the team and myself. Now we will rest for a few days, but we will shortly be back at Spa-Francorchamps".
