Carlos Sainz narrowly misses Q3 in Japanese GP

Saturday, 5 April 2025:
- Free Practice 3: P11, 1:28.846, 22 laps
- Qualifying: P12, 1:27.836, 15 laps

  • Carlos Sainz was only 53 thousandths of a second away from reaching Q3 in the Qualifying session of the Japanese GP, where he took a step forward in his adaptation to the FW47.
  • The Spanish race driver was quicker than his teammate in Q1 (1:28.209) and found almost four tenths in Q2 (1:27.836), but traffic on track and a small mistake in the third sector left him at bay. Very close to his goal, but without options.
  • In the closing stages of Q2, and having received no warning on the radio, a situation happened in which Carlos impeded Lewis Hamilton. This led to a three-place penalty for tomorrow’s Starting Grid.
  • Carlos stresses the importance of taking this step forward in one of the most technical racetracks in the calendar and he thinks the points are the goal for tomorrow’s race.

QUOTES:
“Mixed feelings today. We’ve made some good progress this weekend and I felt a lot more comfortable with the car; there’s still a few things to adjust here and there of course, but this track requires a lot of confidence and I do feel we’ve taken a step forward. On the other hand, I lost around a tenth on S3 on my last lap, so Q3 was reachable and I’m obviously not happy I missed it. However, I prefer to take the positives from today and focus on tomorrow’s race, where we’ll try to do everything to gain some positions and have a positive Sunday".
