P5, 1:31.919, 57 laps
Sakhir, March 12th 2021.- Carlos Sainz did today his first appearance at the wheel of the Ferrari SF21 on the first day of the 2021 pre-season test, that started on Friday and will run until Sunday at the Sakhir International Circuit.
Carlos drove the car for four hours after the lunch break, covering 57 laps in very challenging conditions given that the wind was very strong and there was dust all over the track.
The Spaniard started on the C2 tyre and then ran on the C3 compound, on which he set his fastest lap (1:31.919). He also got a chance to test Pirelli’s prototype tyre, which is made in Turkey instead of Romania as usual.
The lap-times of pre-season testing are not as important as the ones of a regular Qualifying session, given that each car runs on different fuel levels and follows a different run plan. In any case, Carlos’ lap was the fifth fastest overall.
"In general I think today was a positive first day of testing, where the target was to complete our whole run programme and we did it, so happy with that. I guess everyone wants to figure out the performance of each car after today, but I think it is way too early to tell, and very difficult to know in these kind of conditions – full of sand, very windy and with big variations in temperatures. All in all I think we can consider today a very good day. Thanks to everyone at the track and back at the factory. We keep working!".
Testing will continue tomorrow in Sakhir and Carlos will drive the SF21 in the morning hours. Charles Leclerc will drive in the afternoon.
