Trouble-free start for Carlos Sainz at Bahrain Free Practice 1

He only ran on soft tyres when the track was at its slowest point

Sakhir, April 14th 2017.- Carlos Sainz set the nineteenth fastest time of the day in Free Practice 1 for the Bahrain Grand Prix, a session that took place this morning at the Sakhir International Circuit. The Spaniard of Scuderia Toro Rosso focused his attention on the long-runs, and in consequence his lap-times are not representative. He only ran the soft compound when the track was in its slowest conditions.

Free Practice 1 is a useful opportunity to create the foundation for the rest of the weekend, but in Bahrain this sentence is not so true. The track-conditions seen today (37ºC air, 47ºC track) differ from the ones that are expected both for Qualifying and Race, which will be held at night. This reduced this first practice to a simple first encounter with the circuit.

Carlos divided his program into two stints. He used the soft tyre before moving on to the medium one. For this, the lap-time he had set in softs only gave him the nineteenth spot in the time-sheets.

The Spaniard started with an installation lap on softs. Half an hour later, he returned to the track on the same set of tyres to complete a seven-lap run, in which he set his best lap of the day: 1:36.079.

Carlos returned to the pits and waited until the last minutes before rejoining the track once again. This time, he was on medium tyres to perform and eight-lap stint. His strategy was different than his rivals’, who chose to run the soft tyres when the track was in optimum conditions. This is why Carlos’ position in the time-sheets is not representative of the potential within his STR12.

Free Practice 2 for the Bahrain Grand Prix will commence at 18:00 local time -17:00 Spanish time- and we will follow it live via www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
