Scuderia Toro Rosso launches Carlos Sainz’s STR12 for the 2017 F1 season

Carlos will be the first to drive it as testing kicks-off tomorrow at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya

Barcelona, February 26th 2016.- Today Scuderia Toro Rosso launched its new challenger for the 2017 F1 season, the STR12, the car in which Carlos Sainz will compete in his third year as a Formula 1 driver.

The event took place in the Pit-Lane of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya this afternoon at 18:00. Carlos and his teammate Daniil Kvyat revealed their brand new car in front of the international press. The STR12 is both new on the inside and the outside: the inside is a secret well kept by the engineers, the outside is obvious to the naked eye as Toro Rosso has changed dramatically its livery in its 12th year in Formula 1. The team has moved from its original colors to a new electric blue, and combined it with chrome and the red stripes seen in Red Bull Cola cans.

Today was the day when the world discovered the car, but it was not the same case for Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard had a chance to drive it on February 22nd in a filming day at Misano, Italy. Tomorrow he will be behind the wheel as he drivers the STR12 for the first time in preseason testing. It will be the third consecutive year in which he is honored with this opportunity. The team hasn’t announced its full line-up for the week ahead.

As he met the press, Carlos explained how excited he was about the launch. "It’s a special moment, especially when there is such a regulation change. Tomorrow it will be a good feeling, driving the new car and starting to get the first impressions. I hope it will be a step forward, a new racing series. If we are talking of 3 or 3,5 seconds compared to 2016, that would be like the difference between a GP3 and a GP2 or a World Series car".

"Personally, I always felt more comfortable as I climbed up the ladder and found myself in faster cars. I hope that trend continues and I hope I have fun. The faster I go, the more I enjoy. I hope the step this year will be even greater and I am sure that this will put a smile on my face".

Carlos focused its analysis in two main topics. "Last year was very good, but as a sports-man you always have to improve. There are always things you can improve. This will be my number one goal. Then, to have a car that allows me to shine. First things first, but I hope to have a car that is both beautiful and fast. It looks fast right now. I hope this will help us shine a little bit more".

"I know how ambitious this team is. Year by year, they’ve always set the same target: fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. We’ve missed it for two or three years, but it wasn’t because we were lacking will or ambition. If things go a bit better this year, with the drive this team has and the good downforce they’ve produced over the years, we can achieve it. We know it depends of the work of our rivals and how much they’ve developed".

"Regarding the engine, Renault is saying it has improved and that they have done a step forward. They are confident. Last year I was surprised by their development through the season. I’m confident too. I support everything they say. I believe them and if they are saying that it is because of something", he explained.

Last the young Spaniard insisted on how beautiful his STR12 is. "From what I see, I like this car a lot. The new stickers add an extra bit to it and they are refreshing for the team. We like that a lot and we really hope that the car goes well", he concluded.

Winter testing will start tomorrow at 09:00 and will last until 18:00, with a lunch break extending from 13:00 and 14:00 Spanish time (GMT+1). We will follow it live via www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
