Toro Rosso wanted to check his STR11 after a recurrent issue on Kvyat's car
Abu Dhabi, November 25th 2016.- The second Free Practice session for the Abu Dhabi GP wasn't a good one for Carlos Sainz's interests. The driver of Scuderia Toro Rosso was only able to complete five laps after the team took the decision to stop both cars in order to study both cars carefully, after a recurrent problem in Daniil Kvyat's car.
This decision, taken for security reasons, gives Toro Rosso time enough to tackle the issue, although it has seriously compromised Carlos' mileage and the chance to test the car in similar conditions to the ones that will be encountered in tomorrow's Qualifying. This process is especially important at the Yas Marina Circuit, as Free Practice 2 takes place at dusk, just as the official session that will decide Sunday's Starting Grid. On average, every driver completed 35 laps. Carlos could only do five.
Before the team decided to call it a day, Carlos had started a run on soft tyres, the hardest option available for the weekend. He was in a provisional P6, although his was the slowest Top Speed in the whole Pit-Lane (only 329,1 kilometers/hour, 20 slower than his rivals).
After getting out of his car, Carlos regretted that he was not able to run as much as usual.
"The day went quite well, until one problem in Daniil's car stopped us early in the session. This morning we did the work we had foreseen in our schedule, although the tarmac was still very green and it wasn't very useful to fine-tune the car for tomorrow. Sadly we missed the chance to do so this afternoon, but the most important thing is that the team gets on top of what happened to the other car. That will be our focus tonight, so we can make it to tomorrow in perfect conditions despite our low mileage. It's an uphill weekend, but as I said yesterday, in Formula 1 things can change very quickly", he said.
Tomorrow action will resume at the Yas Marina Circuit with the third and final Free Practice session of the Abu Dhabi GP, which will take place at 14:00 local time, 11:00 Spanish time. It will be followed by Qualifying and we will cover them both via www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
