The Spaniard of McLaren performed important tests for the team across 163 laps
Montmeló, 28 February 2020.- Carlos Sainz concluded winter testing for the 2020 Formula One season with a busy day of work at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya behind the wheel of the McLaren MCL35. The Spaniard followed an intense run plan and completed 163 laps without any reliability issues.
Carlos performed short and medium runs in the morning hours on the C2, C3 and C4 tyre compounds. On the latter, he clocked his fastest lap of the winter: 1:16.820. It is faster than twelve months ago, even though last year he did his lap on the C5 compound, a step faster than the one he used today.
In the afternoon, the McLaren driver focused on the long runs. He put together three stints to perform a race simulation, the last one before the Australian GP. He used the C3, C2 and C1 compounds. He then had over 90 minutes to perform the final checks for his team, such as testing the prototype tyre for the Dutch Grand Prix and practicing pit-stops.
Even though pre-season testing has been shortened by 25% compared to 2019, six days instead of eight, Carlos only did 163 laps less than last year. In fact, he was the second most active driver of the winter.
“We completed an intense run plan today to say goodbye to pre-season testing. I tested a couple things that were important to us and now we have useful data to prepare ourselves for the Australian GP. I leave Barcelona feeling that I have done a good job this pre-season. I am really looking forward to the start of the competition”.
The Australian Grand Prix will take place on the 13th, 14th and 15th of March.
