Carlos Sainz: “We’re strong here, we’ll work hard to repeat this tomorrow”

He finishes eighth with 33 laps to his name

Singapore, September 16th 2016.- The first day of Free Practice at the Singapore Grand Prix ended on a positive note for Carlos Sainz and Scuderia Toro Rosso. The Spaniard, who had been seventh earlier in the day, earned the eighth spot in the second session. Overall, it was a good symptom of the potential that the STR11 can unlock around this urban circuit.

Cars roared across the streets in night conditions, with air temperature at 28ºC and track surface at 31ºC. Conditions were therefore different than in the previous practice, which was held under daylight, but still the Toro Rosso showcased the same potential he had shown before.

Carlos hit the track five minutes into the session on a set of supersoft tyres. He began with a six-laps run, his fastest time being a 1'46"924 which already was quicker than his Free Practice 1 pace. He completed another four laps on the red option before moving on to the ultrasoft compound with 55 minutes still to go on the clock. He then set what would be his personal best of the day, a 1'45"50 accomplished during a five-laps run that placed him right behind the Mercedes, the Ferraris, the Red Bulls and Force India's Nico Hülkenberg.

Carlos used the ultrasofts for another run, that time six-laps long, before returning to the initial set of supersofts for a 13-laps long race simulation.

After jumping out of the car, Carlos felt optimistic.

"I think we can be happy with today. For the last three races we had been struggling a bit on Friday, finding it hard to classify further than P15 or P16... So it was good to be back in the top ten today in both practice sessions. Of course, we will push to do the same tomorrow, we're strong here and it motivates the team to move forward – the car works well and we will go through plenty of data tonight in order to be ready for the rest of the weekend – I look forward to it, I enjoy racing at this track!"

Action will resume tomorrow with the third and final Free Practice session, which will be hold at 12:00 Spanish time. Qualifying will commence at 15:00h, later than usual.
