- The Spaniard of Renault squeezed his program in the afternoon session, since he lent his car to Renault’s test driver Artem Markelov in the morning one.
- In Free Practice 1, Markelov ran with big rear rakes and tested the new floor of the R.S.18, as well as some details of the front wing.
- In Free Practice 2, Carlos worked both with the hypersoft and the ultrasoft tyre, and finished the session as the second driver with the most laps (37).
"It is never ideal to miss Free Practice 1 and watch the session from the pit-wall together with the engineers, but I followed it very closely. I was able to complete an intense run-plan in the afternoon. Tyres are very important around here and we have some homework to do tonight, but it is something common since we are not the only ones with tyre-wear on the hypersofts and ultrasofts. I was able to test them in Free Practice 2 and now we will try and take steps forward going into Free Practice 3 and Qualifying".
"The big question mark will be if we make it to Q3 or not. If we don’t, we are free to choose our starting tyre. But there are five or six drivers that will take penalties, so Q3 is appealing. We will decide what to do right before the session".
"We have brought a new floor and the impressions are positive. In this kind of circuits, we have to take off downforce in order to improve our Top Speed. That affects us in the twisty sections, just like the third sector. With the current tyre situation, we may be up for a fun race".
