Carlos Sainz, twelfth in Free Practice 2 at Singapore GP

The Spaniard worked with the supersoft and ultrasoft compounds

Singapore, September 15th 2017.- Carlos Sainz finished twelfth in the second Free Practice for the Singapore Grand Prix. The Spaniard completed 38 laps, setting a fastest lap-time of 1:43.236. His time was 2.384 seconds slower than the leader's, but only 448 milliseconds slower than the seventh classified.
The session went underway without any major issues at the Marina Bay race-track, in perfect weather conditions that resembled the ones expected for Sunday's race. Because Free Practice 2 is the only practice session to be held in night conditions, it provides 90 minutes of valuable track-time to prepare the Grand Prix.
In Carlos' case, Free Practice 2 was more important than usual. The Spaniard had given his car to Indonesian driver Sean Gelael in the opening session, so he only had one chance to get up to speed. It wasn't an issue at all, since Carlos was once again faster than his team-mate. Carlos left the garage when the lights went green, using a set of supersoft tyres. He completed 14 laps on them, beginning with a 1:49.151 that later evolved into a 1:45.721 and finally a 1:43.934.

After a short stay in the garage, the Spaniard hit the track once again. This time, on ultrasoft tyres. His first stint was six laps long, enough to set his best lap of the day: 1:43.236.

Carlos completed a race-simulation of 12 laps on the purple compound to evaluate its performance and wear-ratio, before returning to the supersoft rubber for five final laps on high fuel.

After jumping out of the STR12, Carlos expressed his views on the day. "I had to take my time to get used to it in Free Practice 2, having some extra-laps in the beginning to make sure I recovered my track loss. I think we still haven't recovered it fully yet, but I'm confident we can do it before Qualifying. I am happy with the performance in this session. We still need to understand a few things we have introduced for this car. We have to get our heads around it to make sure they work properly".

The Singapore GP will continue tomorrow Saturday with the third and final Free Practice session, followed by the Qualifying session. They will be held at 18:00 and 21:00 local time respectively, 12:00 and 15:00 Spanish time.
