Carlos Sainz to start from ninth in Mexico GP

Second Q3 in his second event with Renault Sport F1 Team

Mexico City, October 28th 2017.- Carlos Sainz set the ninth fastest time of the day in the Qualifying session for the Mexico GP, in which he made it to Q3 in his second event as an official race-driver for Renault Sport F1 Team.

Qualifying was held in hotter conditions than practice, with an air temperature of 21 degrees and the track at 49. What remained the same was the lack of grip of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, which was the main concern for all drivers are teams.

In Q1, Carlos secured his ticket to Q2 with a single stint on ultrasoft tyres, the same strategy as the leaders. His 1:18.405 lap was enough to make it safely to the following round.

In Q2, Carlos set an excellent 1:17.753 to place himself as the fastest among the midfield teams. His lap was so fast that no driver was able to beat it in the second stint, neither the Spaniard. On he went to Q3.

In the last phase of Qualifying, Carlos stopped the clock at 1:17.794 to clinch the ninth place of the Starting Grid for tomorrow’s Grand Prix.

Carlos felt reasonably happy with this result. “It was a very positive Qualifying for the team, also for me. I’ve felt good in the car and my pace has been good all session long. We are in a good position to fight for points tomorrow, so I am happy about that”.
