Carlos Sainz tests the new hypersoft tyre: "It has much more grip"

The driver of Renault Sport F1 Team completes 109 laps in the last day of running in Abu Dhabi

Yas Marina, November 29th 2017.- Carlos Sainz completed successfully a day of practice with his team Renault Sport F1 Team at the Yas Marina Circuit during the Post-Abu Dhabi test days, the last days of running of the 2017 season. The Spaniard tried the new hypersoft tyre among the brand-new compounds that Pirelli has produced for its 2018 tyre-range.

Pirelli invited all teams to take part in two days of testing so they could compare the performance of the 2017 and 2018 compounds. Overall, the new P Zeros are softer than the previous generation.

During the first hour, teams were allowed to conduct tests and evaluations with their cars. During his first laps, Carlos used the halo and different sensors to study the aerodynamic behavior of his RS.17. From then on, Carlos –and all the other drivers- focused on tyre-work. The Spaniard’s run-plan included short and long runs with the soft, the supersoft, the ultrasoft and the hypersoft compounds. On the pink tyre, he set the sixth fastest lap of the day: 1:39.444.

The Spaniard feels positive about the day.

"It was a good test. We completed our program, which was our main goal. We tested the soft, supersoft, ultrasoft and hypersoft tyres and we could see the main differences for next year. It was a good test to understand better the RS.17, I would like to continue driving”, he joked.

Carlos is happy about the new hypersoft compound. “The hypersoft is a really good tyre in a quick-lap. It gives you much more grip than the tyres of this past year. I tested it in some long-runs and it has some degradation, but the combination of the hypersoft rubber and the RS.17 is something quite special in a flying lap. The ultrasoft is faster too, from the supersoft onwards they are similar”.

2017 is history. On to 2018.

Now we will go to Enstone to work hard for next year. We must make sure that we prepare well physically, the driving position, the race-seat, among other things. Everything is important so that the new Renault adapts to myself”.

Formula 1 won’t return to a race-track until February 2018, in the Barcelona preseason testing. It will be a busy winter for Renault Sport F1 Team and Carlos, who is eager to start his first full season with the team.
