Carlos Sainz starts Singapore GP with P7 in Free Practice 1

Only Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes run faster than the Spaniard from Scuderia Toro Rosso

Singapore, September 16th 2016.- Carlos Sainz has started the weekend of the Singapore Grand Prix with an encouraging seventh place in the first Free Practice session. The Spaniard from Scuderia Toro Rosso was only surpassed by the Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes cars, which are indeed the strongest teams this season.

Contrary to Saturday’s Qualifying or Sunday’s race, Free Practice 1 was held still on daylight conditions. That situation gave a meteorological scenario which is expected to vary slightly as the weekend progresses. Air temperature was 30 degrees and the track was a 34, while the always worrying Singapore humidity stood stable at 65%.

Carlos focused his efforts on carrying on with the aerodynamic tests scheduled by Toro Rosso, the team picking up the work started two weeks ago in Monza in order to check which configuration is more effective for this track. He completed 28 laps in total, working with the supersoft and the ultrasoft Pirelli tyres. While braking points may change as night falls, it was still a good opportunity to get to know the performance of the STR11 around a place which in theory suits its characteristics.

The Spaniard chose a set of supersofts for his installation lap. He used it in another two stints, both five laps long. His best time at the moment was a 1’48”511, which gave him a provisional seventh spot on the timesheets.

Already in the second half of the session, Carlos moved on to the purple Pirelli tyres. He begun with a seven-lap long run on which he improved his pace to 1’46”946. He returned to the pits afterwards, but had time enough on the clock to do a final 10-lap run to check the wear-ratio of his tyres.

Free Practice 2 for the Singapore GP will commence at 15:30 Spanish time. We will follow it live via and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
