The driver took part in the presentation of the 'Don't get sunburned' campaign
Madrid, April 11st 2016.- Carlos Sainz was the distinguished guest and sponsor at the launch of the 'Don get sunburned' campaign, held yesterday at the school La Salle Maravillas from Madrid. It is a pioneer initiative that seeks to establish and promote good habits in kids since their early childhood, in this case regarding sun exposure. The day ended with a 2.000 euros donation by Carlos to the NGO "Edificando" (Building), which is focused on international humanitarian help and is promoted by the school itself.
The Scuderia Toro Rosso driver visited several classrooms as students starred in awe and asked him if he also used sun screen. "I was already conscious about this project, but after hearing Dr. Ruiz speech I'm even more", Carlos said.
As Dr. Ricardo Ruiz explained: "The number of skin cancer cases is getting higher in Spain and one of the major factors are the sunburns suffered during childhood. In fact, a child that has had three sunburns is 10 times more likely to develop a malignant melanoma in his adulthood".
As Dr. Ruiz explained: "For parents, teachers and dermatologists, there was still something missing to properly reach kids: their idols. This is why it was so important to have Carlos Sainz in this project. Kids' idols are key for youngsters to become aware of the importance o following good habits. The driver even told us that he was surprised that while visiting classrooms kids kept on asking him: "do you use sun screen?"
The La Salle school is the first one to install dispensers and free sun screen for their students, as well as setting-up an educational program for young kids and students up to third grade in elementary education. The force behind this initiative is Clinica Dermatologica Internacional in collaboration with Laboratorios Bioderm.
According to scientific research, four in every ten Spaniards will develop skin cancer. In the 90% of these cases, sun will be the cause behind it, although sun screen reduces in a 80% the risk of suffering this illness. The good stat is skin cancer is curable in the 95% of the cases when diagnosed on time.
About "Edificando" (Building), it is a Non-Governmental Organization compromised with human development. It was founded in 1987 at the school and is both national and international.
