The Spaniard worked on the aerodynamics of his car throughout the session
Baku, June 23rd 2017.- Carlos Sainz has begun his participation at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a P16 in the first Free Practice session, which was held this morning in the Baku City Circuit. The Spaniard of Scuderia Toro Rosso finished the morning with a fastest time of 1:47.501, which put him three seconds behind the leaders and just eight tenths short from the Top 10. He completed 13 laps in total.
Practice went underway in perfect weather conditions, under clear blue skies and temperatures over 50 degrees, but teams were more worried about the lack of grip on the track than they were about the risk of rain. Carlos kept his head cool and offered a flawless drive. But because his work was focused on aerodynamic evaluation, his mileage was limited and so were his flying laps attempts.
Carlos hit the track immediately as the lights went green. He started with an installation lap on soft tyres. Contrary to other events, this time he retained that very same rubber for a further three one-lap stints to check the set-up of his STR12. His engineer, Marco Matassa, instructed him to drive at constant speed through the main straight, to gather useful information about his car.
Halfway into the session, Carlos went for the supersoft tyre. He began with an installation lap, then moved into a two-lap run to achieve his first time of the weekend: 1:49.2. His stint was interrupted by a red flag caused by Force India’s Sergio Perez. With five minutes to go, the green flag reappeared and Carlos made the most out of them to improve to 1:47.501.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will continue this afternoon. Free Practice 2 will begin at 17:00 local time, 15:00 Spanish time. As always, we will follow Carlos closely via his official website www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
