Carlos Sainz, seventh on Free Practice 1 at the Bahrain GP

He completes 20 laps without any remarkable issues

Manama, April 1st 2016.- Engines roared down Sakhir's straights as Formula 1 celebrated Free Practice 1 for the Bahrain Grand Prix, a session in which Carlos Sainz ended up on seventh place for Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Carlos used two sets of soft tyres in medium-length stints, business as usual in a first session of a Grand Prix. Temperatures were 10ºC lower than what's usual for this track. Ambient temperature was only 21ºC while track was at 29ºC. In comparison with last year’s FP1, times were nonetheless than 5,5 seconds faster, although conditions could vary tomorrow.

With 15 minutes still to go, Carlos set a 1'34''793, fast enough to stay just behind the Mercedes, Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, the Red Bulls and Nico Hulkenberg's Force India. Just after Carlos, in eight place, was his teammate Max Verstappen. A solid start for Toro Rosso, though as usual times set on a Free Practice tend to not be representative.

Free Practice 2 will start at 17:00 (CET). Night will be falling in Bahrain by then, so temperature will decrease. Qualifying and the race itself start at this very hour, so Free Practice 2 will be a solid reference to get to know the track in the conditions they'll find it later on the week-end.
