He completed 161 laps in the MCL35, more than two full races
Montmeló, 19 February 2020.- Carlos Sainz completed 161 laps at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the first day of winter testing for the 2020 Formula One season. The Spanish driver got to drive the first laps in the McLaren MCL35, experiencing no-setbacks along the way. He was the second driver with the most laps today.
Carlos clocked a 1:17.842 to clinch the sixth place in the standings, even though what really mattered today was putting mileage on the new car. It is always the case in winter testing, but this year even more because preseason has been shortened by two days and teams have less time available to work before travelling to Australia.
The Spaniard ran a wide variety of tyres, all the way from the C2 compound to the C4 (there are five slick compounds, C1 being the hardest and C5 the softest). He put them to work through short runs and long ones. His longest was 18 laps. He performed a race simulation in the afternoon, prior to wrapping-up the day practicing starts and pit-stops.
Today was the only full day of driving for the Spaniard this week. His teammate Lando Norris will be behind the wheel tomorrow. Carlos will come back on Friday afternoon to continue working on the MCL35, before facing the second and final week of winter testing.
"A very good job by everyone today, it shows that hard work over the winter pays off. I managed to complete 161 laps, which is a very decent number for my first day. The car already feels a step on from last year. We aren’t reading too much into the track times, but knowing that we’re completing race simulations and pit-stops on the first day is a very good achievement".
