- Carlos Sainz fought back up to tenth in the Japanese GP, where he secured a point with an overtaking manoeuvre three laps before the chequered flag.
- The Spaniard passed Magnussen and Leclerc at the start, and then Hartley after the Safety-Car period.
- Three laps before the end, he passed Gasly to complete his recuperation.
- He has scored 11 of the last 12 points of Renault in the Championship.
"I am happy. Today’s result was the result of hard-work. I did a good start. I took a gamble and passed a couple cars, and then Hartley after the Safety-Car to get in the fight for points. I passed three or four cars after my pit-stop. I thought it would be had to overtake, but then I managed to find a way past Gasly. It was fun. I enjoyed quite a bit".
"We have scored a point! We have worked for it. I tried to put together every braking-point, because we had some issues with the temperatures of our brakes, but I knew that my pace was better than Gasly’s and that I could pass him".
"I am managing to score points in circuits where at first it seemed impossible to do so, so I am happy. We must keep this trend for the rest of the year".
