- Seventh after the start, Carlos was attacking Red Bull’s Alexander Albon when he was hit in the rear by Renault’s Nico Hülkenberg going into Turn 5.
- He took a puncture in the rear right tyre, forcing him to slowly return to the pits. He was lapped and suffered car damage that cost him more than half a second per lap.
- The McLaren driver unlapped himself during the first Safety-Car period as he embarked himself on a comeback driver on medium tyres.
- He moved up seven spots in eleven laps to cross the line in twelfth position.
"It was a shame to be hit in the first lap, because today we had the pace to finish seventh. Despite the car damage, we were still as fast as our competitors. We deserved a bigger prize. Nico [Hülkenberg] came to me after the race to say sorry for the incident in the first lap. These things can happen in racing, but today is especially frustrating because it cost me many points".
"I unlapped myself when the first Safety-Car came out and I reached the pack with the second one. I had some nice battles in the closing laps, but today we weren’t meant to be there, we were meant to be further up, racing away from our rivals. Today was a day to score some good points. But I felt well both mentally and physically, so we move on to Russia".
