- Race: Retired, 52 laps
- Carlos Sainz was on a recovery drive that would have enabled him to score points at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, taking risks, but in the end he retired after an incident.
- Rain fell on the racetrack in the hours leading to the race and then again a few minutes just before the start. Still, starting on intermediate tyres was the reasonable choice given that rain would only last a few minutes.
- Twelfth on the grid, Carlos was down to fourteenth after the start, overtaken by drivers who had started on full-wet tyres. When the rain eased off, though, he passed them again.
- The track dried up with 30 laps to go and then the Spanish switched to slick tyres, moving up to the Top 10 and being in contention for the points.
- On Lap 52, though, he touched a wet kerb and he spun. In the process, he touched another car and his Ferrari suffered some damage that led to his retirement.
QUOTES:
“A race to forget for the team. We knew today was going to be difficult because we have been struggling all weekend with grip and car handling. The entire race was on the edge, and when I tried to push in the DRS train to overtake I did the mistake on the kerb. Sorry to the team and to Albon. We have work to do ahead of Spain to understand what has happened this weekend and make sure we don’t find ourselves again in this situation in the upcoming races. We move on".
