- Despite starting from the last row, Carlos Sainz executed a great comeback performance with more than 10 overtaking manoeuvres on track and an intelligent strategy to finish the race in eighth.
- The Spaniard passed the two Toro Rossos at the start, and Robert Kubica, Romain Grosjean, Kevin Magnussen and Daniel Ricciardo before his pit-stop.
- He postponed his pit-stop until the Lap 42 in order to have fresher tyres. With an electrifying pace, he passed Lance Stroll, Nico Hülkenberg and Antonio Giovinazzi to make himself a place in the points, and then Sergio Pérez and Kimi Räikkönen to finish eighth.
- Today’s result makes Carlos stronger in the seventh place of the Drivers’ Championship. A broken front wing with nine laps to go prevented him from fighting for the seventh place.
QUOTES:
"I am really happy. It was one of my best races as a Formula 1 driver. We started from last place, so we were up for a long opening stint. We saved tyres up until Lap 41. When I pitted for hard tyres, I was one second quicker than my rivals. I passed them one by one. I had the pace to get Pierre Gasly, but I could do so because of an issue with my front wing".
"I had never had a car in which I could start from last and fightback this way. I am really happy. I did many clean overtakings, although they didn’t show them on television. Today our pace was great. Thanks to the entire team. Great race and great comeback! Next stop, Silverstone".
