Monza, Saturday 5th September 2020
- Free Practice 3: P2, 1:20.318, 14 laps
- Qualifying, P3, 1:19.695
- Carlos Sainz was third in Qualifying at Monza, matching his best personal result as a Formula 1 driver. Tomorrow he will only have the two Mercedes cars in front.
- The McLaren driver was fourth in Q1 (1:20.099) and third in Q2 (1:19.705). He had two sets of softs available for Q3 after going though the first phase with a single run.
"I am very happy. The qualifying sessions are tighter than ever this year, so it is a good feeling to be the first car after the two Mercedes. I put together some good laps and during Q1 I saved another set of tyres for Q3. Thanks to that I could risk it all on my last attempt, especially through Ascari and Parabolica, to put together that lap-time".
"This result is important, especially after the disappointment we had in Spa-Francorchamps, but we still have to fight tomorrow for the points. So far we haven’t had the season we deserved, but we are not lifting up at all. Tomorrow we will start the race from the second row of the grid, so we will be surrounded by some rivals that are really strong. We will give our best to score a good result".
