Carlos Sainz, set to start P8 at the Austrian GP

Saturday 24th of July 2020, Spielberg:
- Free Practice 3: P13, 1:05.177, 24 laps
- Qualifying: P8, 1:03.971

  • Carlos Sainz set the eighth fastest time in the qualifying session of the Austrian GP.
  • The McLaren driver was sixth in Q1 with a 1:04.537 lap and seventh in Q2 with a 1:03.971, beating the two Ferraris and a Red Bull.
  • In Q3, he set a 1:03.971 in his first outing, which was on used tyres. In the closing stages he switched to a new set, but he was not able to improve as he couldn’t find the right balance of the car.

"Not the final lap I was aiming for, but it has been a very good day for the team overall. We were up there in the fight with teams that last year were faster than us and that is good news. I have been struggling with the balance of my car since the start of the weekend, but it’s a good thing that we are able to fight in the Top 10 from the very first Qualifying of the year. Tomorrow won’t be an easy race, but we showed good pace today and we will try to carry that to Sunday".
