The Spaniard looks forward to racing at home in Barcelona
Madrid, 3 may 2018.- Carlos Sainz was the special guest at the presentation of the 2018 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, in a meeting with the Spanish press organized by the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya at the city of Madrid.
The Spaniard of Renault Sport Formula One Team expressed his enthusiasm as he gears up for racing in front of his home crowd, specially the 3.500 fans that will be cheering for him from the Carlos Sainz Grandstand. Carlos is eager to get to the Circuit. “I love this race and I have always done well in it. I don’t know if it is because of the fans, the fact that I race at home soil or if it is a combination of both, but the fact is that I have always felt really comfortable there and this year I would like it to be the same, because it is one of my talismans".
Carlos arrives at the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya after finishing fifth in the Azerbaijan GP, his best performance so far since his arrival at Renault Sport and the best result of the brand since its return to Formula One.
"In these past four races I have been improving all the time. I have gained confidence in the car and I know that we all have margin for improvement, both in terms of the team, the set-up and my own understanding of the car. We are fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, very close to our goal, which is the fourth place. We are heading in the right direction and we can only improve".
Carlos recalled his sweetest memories of Montmelo. "I have two very good memories: my fifth place in the Qualifying of 2015, in what was essentially my fifth race in Formula One. I didn’t know what to expect and I managed to be fifth on the grid. And then the other memory is the race of 2016. I was up to third after the start, right behind the two Ferrari. I remembered driving by my grandstand during the Safety-Car and seeing all my fans there. It looked great".
"I feel a unique sensation each time I see the fans at my grandstand. It is a true privilege. People may think you don’t notice it once you are on the car, but whenever there is a Safety-Car I always try and look at them because I know that they are there supporting me. After each session, I try and slow down a bit to wave at them", he explained.
Carlos also thanked the sponsors and institutions that contribute to the Carlos Sainz Grandstand. "I would like to thank the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Renault and Estrella Galicia. We owe them a lot for their help. This year we sold over 3.500 tickets in only five days, which is amazing".
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will host the Spanish Grand Prix on the 11th, the 12th and the 13th of May, in what will be the 28th running of the event at the track.
