Low mileage in the less important session of the weekend.
Abu Dhabi, 25th November 2016.- The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is well underway as Carlos Sainz finished its first Free Practice session in a solid eighth place at the Yas Marina. The Spaniard of Scuderia Toro Rosso used two different compounds as he completed 21 laps around the track.
Carlos’ result is positive. Not just because of his lap-time, but mainly because he could enjoy a trouble free session. Nevertheless, they still were the less important 90 minutes of the weekend as air temperature was 31ºC and the track was 35ºC. These are different conditions to the ones expected for Saturday’s Qualifying and Sunday’s race, which will be held at dusk and therefore in cooler weather.
Carlos hit the track two minutes into the session. He was on soft tyres. Shortly after his first installation run, he began his first proper stint of the day, 10-laps long, finishing it on a provisional P21. By the time he returned that set of tyres as stipulated by the rules, he was the less active driver around. In fact, he stayed in pits until 15 minutes to the end.
The Spaniard went out again. This time he was on supersofts. He completed ten laps on them, setting along the way his fastest time of the morning: 1’44”685. He fell 1”816 short from the leaders, who used the ultrasoft option. The tarmac was green as usual for an opening session, more even so for a track like the Yas Marina, which is affected by the desert sand. Toro Rosso focused its work in the closing stages of the session, as conditions were better.
Free Practice 2 for the Abu Dhabi GP will commence at 17:00 local time, 14:00 Spanish time. We will follow it live via www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
