Good sensations despite traffic and hotter conditions
Bakú, June 18th 2016.- The third and final Free Practice session for the European Grand Prix finished with Carlos Sainz as the 12th fastest driver. It was the last shakedown ahead of today's Qualifying, for which the goal will be once more to get into Q3.
Carlos used two sets of tyres: one of the soft option, another one of the supersoft one. He began with a 7-lap stint on the yellow-marked tyres, on which he set a 1'46"9. Afterwards, he returned to the pits and did an evaluation lap on the same set before turning his attention to the supersofts, on which he was able to improve to 1'46"1. He did eight laps on them to evaluate their wear rate, which was a logic strategy considering today's heat and the higher track temperatures compared to yesterday's practice. That affected tyre-wear, as they suffer more degradation the more heat they have to handle. Anyway, Q3 is still Carlos' goal.
These were the thoughts of the driver from Scuderia Toro Rosso after stepping out of his car.
"I think we will be close to the Q3 edge. We must focus. Today a Williams failed, but we are starting to struggle too. It's what we expected. We'll change a couple of things in the car and see if we can move ahead a bit. Today track temperature was much higher, it's more difficult to drive the car because tyres overheat easily. Temperature will be cooler later; I hope that suits us better".
"If tomorrow is a hot day, tyre-wear will be higher and we may have to do another stop in the race. We'll keep an eye on that, because maybe what happened yesterday will be little important. We know we can improve a bit. It was a trouble-filled session, with many yellow flags and traffic, and it's hard to get a lap together in these conditions. We must focus for Q1 and let's see if we can do a good job".
