The Spaniard secured his fastest times of the weekend so far after the work done at night by his engineers
Sochi, April 29th 2017.- Carlos Sainz set the ninth fastest time in the third and final Free Practice session for the Russian GP. The Spaniard of Scuderia Toro Rosso completed 20 laps and tested the supersoft and the ultrasoft compounds using the set-up he chose on Friday together with his team after analyzing yesterday’s data.
Although the track-temperature rose to 34 degrees, the circuit of Sochi was still a challenge for the whole grid in terms of dealing with the temperatures of their brakes and tyres. Carlos started on a set of supersofts, on which he completed two stints of seven laps each, separated by a short visit to the pits. Finally, with nine minutes to go, Carlos moved on to the ultrasoft and immediately set a 1:36.164 lap, which granted him the ninth place in the time-sheets, almost seven tenths ahead of his teammate.
After getting out of his car, Carlos expressed his views on the behavior of the ultrasoft compound since his car was one of the very few to set its quickest time in its first flying lap. "If you set your time on your first lap, you can push it much more through Sector 3, although you must sacrifice the first two sectors because the front tyres are still cold and you can’t steer the car. This is the key, to try to put it all together, warm up the front tyres and make it work".
"Now we must go for it at Qualifying and tomorrow we will think about what is possible since we will start three places behind. The key is to do a good Qualifying and be as ahead as possible to minimize the penalty", Carlos concluded.
Qualifying will begin at 15:00 local time, 14:00 CET. We will follow it closely via www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
