Carlos Sainz lands a P10 and makes a good impression in first practice with Renault

Good Free Practice 1 for the Spaniard in the United States

Austin, October 20th 2017.- Carlos Sainz clinched the tenth spot of the standings in his first Free Practice session as an official race-driver for Renault Sport F1 Team. The Spaniard set a fastest lap of 1:38.093 in his debut with the RS17.

Before arriving at the United States, Carlos had prepared himself in the factory, where he had the chance to use the team’s simulator. But today was the real deal, as he had to clock his first laps with the new car. Weather conditions didn’t help, as it drizzled over the Circuit of the Americas and drivers were forced to use the intermediate tyres during the first half of the session. Luckily the track dried-up in the closing stages and Carlos was able to run on slicks.

The goal this morning was to get to know the RS17 and the new team. Despite the demanding weather conditions, the Spaniard drove a flawless session and accomplished the working program his engineers had prepared for him.

Using his brand new helmet, Carlos left the garage seven minutes into the session. He completed two installation laps on intermediate tyres, enough for the team to check that the systems of the car were working fine and as expected.

Some minutes later, he began his first run of the morning. It was a seven-lap run on intermediates, useful mileage to discover the peculiarities of his new machine. His first lap was a 1:52.071, but he quickly improved to 1:48.927 before returning to the pits.

In the final stage, Carlos and Renault turned their attention to the supersoft compound. The Spaniard completed 15 laps on it across two different stints, one of nine laps and another one of six. On his first stint, his fastest lap was a 1:38.643. In the second one, he improved to 1:38.093 to claim the tenth spot on the standings, just in front of his teammate.
