Last European race of the year
Monza, September 5 2019.- Carlos Sainz finalises his preparation for the Italian GP, the thirteenth round in the 2019 Formula 1 season, which is set to take place this weekend at the iconic Autodromo Nazionale di Monza as the last race of the European leg of the Championship.
The McLaren driver is seventh in the Drivers’ Championship upon his arrival to the Milanese racetrack. He holds a 25-points edge over his nearest competitor despite his recent retirement at the Belgian GP, where he suffered a mechanical failure.
This weekend he will race with Renault’s latest engine spec, called Spec C, without any grid penalties.
Carlos’ best result at this track, which has been in the Formula 1 calendar ever since 1950, is an eighth place in the 2018 race.
Tyres available for the weekend are the C2, the C3 and the C4, identified as the hard, the medium and the soft compound respectively. Carlos will have two sets of the hardest option, two of the intermediate one and nine of the fastest one.
"After a difficult weekend in Belgium in all senses, I’m looking forward to racing at the Italian GP. We know that we have areas to work on and we are focussed on maximizing our performance throughout the weekend. Spa was a clear example that the midfield battle is going to be tough until the end of the season, but we will give our best".
"Just as Spa-Francorchamps, Monza is different than the rest. In Belgium our car was much faster in race conditions on Sunday than on Saturday’s Qualifying. Maybe here it will be similar in a way, but we won’t have a clear picture until we hit the track. We’ll try our best in Qualifying, but we know that this season we tend to be faster when the lights go out".
