He was among the fastest under the rain and didn't use the ultrasofts at all
Spielberg, June 1st 2016.- Carlos Sainz finished sixth in the standings after Free Practice 2 for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring. It was an eventful session, as heavy showers fell unexpectedly eight minutes into the green flag. It was precisely in those wet conditions when Carlos managed to be one of the fastest driver around.
Carlos used a set of intermediate tyres for 10 laps on which he was able to improve up to 1'16"571. He faced compromised conditions, as the first sector was almost dry while the last two turns were totally wet. In delicate conditions, the Spaniard lapped at a regular place and kept his car within the white lines while many rivals suffered run-offs due to the asphalt being very slippery.
As soon as the track was dry, Carlos went for a set of supersoft slicks. First, he did eight laps to climb within the Top 10. Later, he grabbed another set of the same compound and set what would be his best time of the day, a 1'08"713 that gave him the sixth position. It was very remarkable to notice that nobody but Carlos was able to improve on the supersoft tyres after the rains. Nico Rosberg was a few milliseconds faster on the same compound, although he did his time with his Mercedes before the rain, when track had more rubber on it.
After stepping out of his car, Carlos was positive after the first day of practice:
"It was a weird session; it can't be compared to the usual Free Practice 2. Rain split our work in two and in fact we chose to only use the supersoft tyre. We didn't do any long stint. I felt well under the rain, although the circuit was very tricky. There were some zones where you had to try to cool down your tyres and there were other sectors were you had to look for the dry line".
"For tomorrow, Q3 is still an unknown. Today we couldn't lap as much as we would have liked, so we can't fall for the sixth place I did in both sessions. We've seen before our rivals' potential. On top of that, tomorrow it may rain during Qualifying so everything could turn out to be a lottery. We will work very hard to be within the Top 10, that's for sure".
Free Practice will continue tomorrow in the Red Bull Ring with the third and final round, which will begin at 11:00 Spanish time. We will follow it live via www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
