The Spaniard completes 16 laps and works with the three Pirelli compounds available
Baku, June 17th 2016.- The European Grand Prix has begun and with it the history of Azerbaijan in the Formula 1 world. Carlos Sainz was ninth in the first Free Practice session of the event, a session in which he discovered in person the secrets of a track he had only knew from the team's simulator.
Carlos did 16 laps and used the three tyre compounds that Pirelli has brought to this event: the medium, the soft and the supersoft. He went for the most conservative option for his installation lap, in which he checked his cars' systems as he inspected the asphalt for the very first time.
The Spaniard went back out 15 minutes later, this time on the soft tyres. He did eight laps with a personal best of 1'50"551. After finishing that run, he came back in to the pits but immediately went back out for another nine laps on the same compound. Because they were old tyres, it was not possible to improve the previous pace.
Carlos then changed his mind to focus on the supersoft Pirelli compound, but by the time he had begun his first run the session was interrupted by a red flag caused by a crash from Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo. With the green flag back in the air, the Spaniard went back out but slightly touched the wall, damaging the front-end of his car. He came to the pits to fit a new part, and with his aerodynamics working at their best he could finally went flat-out to stop the clock at 1'49"267, his personal best for the morning.
Free Practice 2 for the European Grand Prix will commence at 17:00 local, time, 15:00 Spanish time.
