Wind was his only concern as he performed a trouble-free race simulation
Montmelo, March 6th 2018.- Carlos Sainz made it through the fifth day of winter testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the first day of the week for the Spaniard of Renault Sport F1 Team, who got behind the wheel of the R.S.18 in the afternoon session. He had enough time to complete 91 laps, 420 kilometres of mileage in three hours and a half of track-time.
Carlos was happy as the day came to an end. “It was a very positive day. We completed our program as expected. To do 90 laps in one afternoon is something positive. We focused on the long runs, because we wanted to recover the mileage we couldn’t gather during the previous week. It went well, because we made over 130 laps between us two”.
Despite a minor setback in the morning hours, reliability was fine. Carlos faced other challenges. “We had strong winds today. It almost pushed you out of the corners in some places. That made it more difficult to properly evaluate the car. It was a sensible day for tyres too, because the track is very dark and temperatures vary a lot depending on sun exposure”.
Renault split its program between its two drivers, and Carlos was happy with this policy. “When you get in the car for an afternoon run, you are always full of energy nevermind the circumstances. I enjoyed it. It also means that I will get to drive the car three days more, not just one!”
Talking about his testing program, he explained that today’s goal was to gather mileage. Tomorrow he will focus on set-up adjustment and performance-work. “Today was about running a race simulation, because you want to make sure that you don’t need to return to the pits, that you can stay out there. We will have to do other things tomorrow. We will do long runs, but we also want to start testing other things”, he said.
Winter testing will continue tomorrow in the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The latest weather forecast predicts warm temperatures. Carlos will be behind the wheel during the morning hours before his teammate takes the wheel in the afternoon.
