Carlos Sainz, fourteenth in Free Practice 1 at the Hungarian GP

He tested all the tyre compounds and set his fastest time on old supersofts

Mogyoród, July 28th 2017.- Carlos Sainz finished fourteenth in the opening Free Practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix, held this morning at the Hungaroring circuit. Carlos completed 25 laps in total and set a fastest time of 1:20.917. He was 2.4 seconds behind the leader and just five tenths short from the Top 10.

The day began with clear blue skies at the village of Mogyoród, with an air temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and the track at 28. These perfect weather conditions helped all drivers in their will to gain more experience and develop the set-up of their cars.

Carlos tested all three compounds available for the weekend –medium, soft, supersoft–. At 10:00, he hit the track as the lights went green. He completed his installation lap on the medium rubber. He didn't have to wait long to rejoin the action for his first proper run. On soft tyres, the Spaniard clocked six laps, exchanging flying laps and cool-down laps. His fastest time was 1:22.516. The stint was interrupted by a red flag caused by Antonio Giovinazzi's Sauber.

When the session approached its halfway point, the Spaniard picked-up the supersoft compound. His first stint lasted for seven laps. He picked-up his pace and set a 1:22.157, but suffered an issue with a broken bit on the floor of his STR12. That caused a lot of understeering in the car, but the team found the problem and, with 20 minutes to go, Carlos was able to complete his fastest stint of the morning. Using the very same set of supersoft rubber, he first improved to 1:21.414 before going to 1:21.267 and finally 1:20.917. It could have been better, but Jolyon Palmer caused a second red flag in the closing stages of the session and Carlos had to return to the pits earlier than expected.

The Hungarian Grand Prix will continue at 14:00 Spanish time with the second Free Practice session. As always, we will keep an eye on Carlos' progress via his official website www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
