Carlos Sainz focuses on race preparation in Free Practice 2 for the Bahrain GP

Positive day in Sakhir as Toro Rosso completes its program

Manama, April 1st 2016.- Free Practice 2 for the Bahrain Grand Prix came to a close with Carlos Sainz in 13th place, but most important with 36 laps to his name and their consequent valuable information for Scuderia Toro Rosso.

The first night session was key for the unfolding of the week-end itself. After cars had clenead up the track this morning, sun fell and temperatures fell with it, with ambient at 20ºC and track at 23ºC. Similar conditions to the ones to be encountered tomorrow in Qualifying and in Sunday for the race. Teams focused their efforts on studying the track and preparing their cars, so they weren't in a rush to go for fast and impressive lap times.

This was Carlos' case, who completed 22 of his 36 laps on the very same set of medium tyres, the hardest one available. He used them first for a short stint but later moved to a longer run as he entered his race simulation. At the beginning of the session he used the supersofts, in which he set what would become his fastest time. He also ran a 6-lap stint with them. There were two Virtual Safety-Car periods in the last moments of the session due to an issue with Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari and debris coming from Romain Grosjean's Haas, but they didn't affect Carlos' and Toro Rosso's work.

These were Carlos' thoughts at the end of the first day of practice in Sakhir.

"I'm happy because today we didn't have any issues and we could complete the program we had prepared. I've focused on setting up the car for the race and I'm quite happy with our pace on mediums. I'm less happy with my supersoft run. It's difficult to go from mediums to supersofts and then set your optimum lap because there is a three seconds difference between them. Plus, on the supersofts you can only do a fast lap and I made a little mistake in mine, so my time was not good enough. Anyway, a positive day that's given us plenty information to analyze together with the team" Carlos said.

Action will resume tomorrow at 14:00 Spanish time with the last free practice session of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
