Scuderia Toro Rosso will fight to enter Q3 in Qualifying
Sochi, April 30th 2016 - Last free practice session for the Russian Grand Prix finished with Carlos Sainz in ninth place, an encouraging for the Qualifying session to be held in Sochi later in the day.
The Spaniard's work was focused on the supersoft tyres, on which he completed 25 laps. More laps than any other except for Sebastian Vettel (28). On his last set of tyres he set his fastest time, a 1'38"465 lap which was 2"062 seconds slower than leader's Lewis Hamilton.
Temperatures were colder than they were yesterday, as clouds in the sky reduced the effect of the sun on the track surface. Track temperatures didn't surpass the 30ºC mark while yesterday they reached up to 40ºC. Consequently, grip and tyre-wear were different than yesterday.
Carlos talked to the media after stepping out of the STR11:
"We know that supersofts behave in a way that they stick together very well during the first two sectors, but on the third one we start to lose grip on the rear. We are on the edge of making it to Q3, so we'll need a good lap to secure our access on it".
"We are running low on downforce, because otherwise we would be so far behind the others on Top Speed. We've seen that the supersoft tyre wears a little bit more than we expected. I'm sure that the cold asphalt we had today in this cloudy morning session has contributed to that. Let's see if tomorrow it improves, because otherwise it will be difficult for most of the cars to cover the race with a single pit-stop. The second choice would be to do it in two stops".
Qualifying for the Russian GP will start at 14:00 Spanish time.
