Carlos Sainz, fifth in Free Practice 2 at Monaco GP

Good feelings for the driver and his team

Montecarlo, May 25th 2017.- The second Free Practice session of the Monaco Grand Prix left Carlos Sainz and Scuderia Toro Rosso good sensations. The Spaniard achieved a solid fifth place with a pace very similar to his teammate’. Despite the good result he remembers that it is better to stay rudent ahead of the Grand Prix, since the engineers will have plenty of time to improve their cars before Saturday, the day of the Qualifying session.

When the session began, the thermometers registered an air temperature of 23 degrees and the track stood at 44, warmer conditions than this morning. Thanks to the previous running and the set-up work, the cars were able to immediately improve their FP1 pace. In Carlos case, his first timed-lap was four tenths faster already than his fastest lap of the morning.

The Spaniard started on a set of ultrasoft tyres, on which he completed a seven lap run. Afterwards, he picked up another set to clock nine laps more. In the fifth of which, he set a 1:13.400 and clinched the fifth spot on the time-sheets, just 680 milliseconds short from the leader.

After visiting the pits, Carlos remained on the ultrasofts to complete 16 laps in race conditions. He finished the day returning to his initial set to finish the session with 43 laps in total, the sixth most active driver of the day.

After jumping out of his Car, Carlos expressed his satisfaction for completing the scheduled programme but said he remained cautious despite the good result. "I think that we did what we needed to do on a Thursday in Monaco, building the speed up little by little and trying different configurations to give myself confidence with the car. After today's two practice sessions it's safe to say that we're quite happy with everything. Obviously, from Thursday to Saturday a lot of things could change so we can't let ourselves get carried away with today's result, but it's definitely a good starting point! I'm looking forward to the rest of the weekend!".

On Saturday, Formula 1 will return to the streets of Monaco with the third and final Free Practice session, which will begin at 11:00. We will follow it closely via Carlos’ official webpage – and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
