Kilometers and more experience for the Spaniard, this time on ultrasoft tyres
Sochi, April 28th 2017.- Carlos Sainz finished fifteenth in the second Free Practice session of the Russian Grand Prix. The driver of Scuderia Toro Rosso completed 36 laps. His fastest time was a 1:37.0832. He was two tenths faster than his teammate and 2’9 seconds slower than leader Sebastian Vettel.
Carlos focused his attention on the evaluation of the compound that he hadn’t tested earlier in the day, the ultrasoft Pirelli tyre.
Carlos started with a seven-lap run to gather data about the degradation of his tyres. His fastest lap, a 1:38.214, was already seven tenths faster than the time he had set earlier in the day on supersofts.
After a visit to the pits, Carlos returned to the track equipped with yet another set of ultrasofts, the option that promises to be the main choice both in Qualifying and the initial phase of the race.
Carlos began with a 1:37.322 lap, but as his tyres gained temperature he found grip and improve to 1’37”083. When he finished the stint, he returned to the Pit-Lane before kick-starting a race simulation with a 22-lap run on used ultrasofts.
In his encounter with the media, Carlos insisted on the delicate track conditions.
"It was quite a challenging Friday. We have learnt quite a lot. It is quite tricky out thyere. The track is very slippery and it is very difficult to get these Pirellis up to temperature in a single lap performance, which makes our life quite difficult in the out-laps and in the push-laps to get the balance right. Although the sun is out there and it is quite warm, it is quite difficult. We need to keep working for tomorrow because we are not exactly where we would like to be for Qualifying".
The third and final Free Practice session for the Russian Grand Prix will start tomorrow Saturday at 12:00 local time, 11:00 CET. The Qualifying session will be held at 15:00 (14:00 CET). As always, we will follow Carlos closely via www.carlosainz.es and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
