He sets his fastest time on medium tyres
Sepang, September 30th 2016.- The Malaysia Grand Prix started today with Friday's Free Practice 1, where Carlos Sainz managed to finish fifteenth. His fastest time was 1'38"055, which put him 2"828 away from leader Nico Rosberg. The Spaniard from Scuderia Toro Rosso made his best lap while on medium tyres, although he had previously tried Pirelli’s soft option.
The session was held under clear blue skies, with air temperature at 31 degrees and the track at 48. Humidity was at 61%, just as usual for this track. Carlos, who for this Grand Prix is using on his STR11 the fifth engine of the season, started his work straightaway as the green flag was waved. He begun on soft tyres, but a fire on Kevin Magnussen's car caused a red flag. As the session was restarted, Carlos head out again completing an eight-lap run on soft tyres. He later picked up again that very same set of tyres for another three laps.
Up next, the Spaniard chose the medium tyres and completed 13 laps on them across two stints. It was during the first run that he clocked his fastest lap overall (1'38"055). It's worth noticeable that many of his rivals made their fastest times while on soft tyres. He was very constant later on in the second run, lapping around the 1’41 mark.
The driver from Scuderia Toro Rosso went through the session without experiencing any problems, willing to keep on working on his car's set-up and to get to know the characteristics of Sepang's new resurfaced track.
