Carlos Sainz, eleventh in Free Practice 1 at Italian GP

The driver of Scuderia Toro Rosso will take a 10-place penalty for using the fifth MGU-H

Monza, October 1st 2017.- Carlos Sainz finished eleventh in the first Free Practice session for the Italian GP, held this morning in Monza. Carlos completed 22 laps. His best lap-time, 1:23.680, was 2.143 seconds short from the leader’s, but only 363 milliseconds away from the seventh position, the front of the midfield.

The Spaniard of Scuderia Toro Rosso, who today turned 23 years old, received a 10-place penalty for using the fifth MGU-H of the season. He will take the penalty at an unfriendly circuit for the STR12, but this means that he will arrive clean and ready to fight in Singapore, where the team expects to be more competitive.

Free Practice went underway under a cloudy sky, which compromised the thermal evolution of the track. It only reached 24ºC, far from the conditions that are expected for the weekend. The air temperature was 22ºC. Rain appeared with 30 minutes to go, but not with the intensity foreseen in the weather forecasts.

Carlos was one of the early birds of the session. He completed his installation lap on medium tyres and tested the halo to gain experience for the 2018 season. When he returned to the garage, his mechanics took off the halo and Carlos advanced to the following phase of his working program. Today, he focused his attention on the supersoft compound and the low-downforce elements that Toro Rosso has brought to Italy.

The Spaniard began with a nine-lap stint, in which he slowly picked-up his pace. He began with a 1:24.615 lap, then clocked a 1:24.615 and finally a competitive 1:23.881. He put himself on a provisional eighth place, before falling to ninth as he returned to the Pit-Lane.

Carlos used a second set of supersoft tyres, on which he completed a seven-lap run. Despite encountering traffic in his first flying lap, he recovered and found a couple tenths –1:23.608–. He also reported rain at the Parabolica.

Carlos waited in pits for the track conditions to improve. When they did, he picked-up the same Pirelli P Zero supersofts he had used on his second stint. He completed five laps on them before the chequered flag.
The Italian GP will continue this afternoon with the second Free Practice session, which will begin at 14:00 Spanish time. We will keep you updated as usual on Carlos via his official website and our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
