Carlos Sainz, eighth in Free Practice 1 for the Canadian GP

He completes 21 laps on three different runs, always on supersofts

Montreal, June 10th 2016.- Carlos Sainz has started the Canadian Grand Prix on the right foot, as he has set the eighth fastest time in the first Free Practice session held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Carlos used two sets of the Pirelli Supersoft tyre, which here is the halfway point between the soft and the ultrasoft ones. He used these two sets during three stints plus his installation lap. First, he set his best time, a 1'16"543 which arrived in a short run after the red flag period. Felipe Massa's Williams had crashed against the barriers in Turn 1 and it was necessary to stop the session for a few minutes, even though the driver was fine.

After setting that first reference time, Carlos carried on with his program and picked-up another set of the Supersoft option to clock 12 consecutive laps on it. Finally, with 10 minutes left to go, he went back out again on used tyres to do five laps more and conclude his work in the Free Practice 1.

It's still too early to judge on the results, but the Spaniard from Toro Rosso has finished the morning trouble free and on top of that his Top Speed has always been among the Top 10 thanks to the low-drag configuration of his STR11.

Free Practice 2 will commence at 14:00 local Canadian time, 08:00pm Spanish time. As always, we will follow Carlos' efforts live via our Twitter account @carlosainzinfo.
