They will enjoy extra aerodynamics, but he wants to check STR11's efficiency in medium speed turns
Monaco, May 25th 2016.- The Great Circus has made itself at home in the Monaco bay area and Carlos Sainz has answered questions from the media on the last day before the first Free Practice sessions, which will begin tomorrow and not in Friday because the Monegasque Principality celebrates Ascension Day.
These were the first quotes from Carlos:
"If there is a circuit where you want to perform especially well, it's either at your homeland or in Monaco. Things went well for me at home, so I expect to have the same outcome here. I've always liked Monaco, ever since I first came here with the World Series by Renault. My first lap was very fast and I've always felt very comfortable, which is nice for Formula 1 as it's important to feel confident here".
"For Toro Rosso, it's very difficult to predict where we will be this weekend. We have good aerodynamics, we know that, and here there are no straights here where we would lose time. But that doesn't mean that we will be the strongest around in second-third gear turns. We know we are very strong in fifth-sixth-seventh gear turns, but in Barcelona we struggled a bit on the second-third ones. I hope we make it to Q3 and to the points, that is always our goal, but teams like McLaren and Force India have good mechanical grip and Williams is stronger this year in the twisty stuff. That can complicate a lot Q3. I prefer to stay prudent and think that we'll have to work a lot to be in Q3. That's why I believe that it will be very tight among the Top 3 teams, but from the 4th to the 7th it will too, even though we may be a step behind the leaders".
A race-winning experience
Curious thing is Carlos has already won in Monaco. It was not in the Formula 1 Grand Prix but in the Monaco Kart Cup, back in 2009. It was held on October 18th, just a few days ahead of his single-seater debut. Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica are among the winners of this event. Carlos raced with Genikart and wore Fernando Alonso's colors. He scored Pole Position and victories both in the pre-final and the final.
